$5 Challenge – Day 1 $5 Challenge – Day 3 – Conclusion
Sep 09

The astute reader will realize the gap of 6 days between my last $5 challenge and this one, but that is totally explainable.  Holiday weekend & working from home.

Okay, so onto day 2 of the challenge.  Today I was wondering where to go, but couldn’t decide so I thought I’d try the food court in the mall across the street.  Now, that may just be cheating since there are multiple restaurants to choose from, but I knew from the get-go that I wanted pizza.

A glance at the pizza shop menu gave me a lot of options.  I could grab a number of salads under $5, or a handful of breadsticks, or pretty much any slice of pizza I wanted.  Drinks however, started at $1.49 so once again, decision time.  Do I go for a slice of cheese at $3.09 and add a soda, or do I skip the beverage and go for something with meat on it?!?  For me it was pretty easy.  The salty spice of pepperoni, sausage, and other veggie toppings far outweighs my enjoyment of a carbonated beverage.  Getting the drink out of the way also gave me some more room for choice, so I went all the way for a slice of the Supreme and a nice cold ice water.

I have to say this was an absolutely satisfying meal.  The pizza from this place is VERY good, and the portions are gigantic.  I think they may have a rule of “no napkins if the cheap bastard can’t spend more than $5″ as I was left without napkins (either that or I just missed them).  However, it was quite a deal.

So in the end, I do have to highly recommend the food court of a mall as part of the $5 challenge.  The ONLY drawback to this meal was that I ended up buying $175 worth of clothes that I desperately needed but didn’t intend to get today.  That was a direct result of my choice for locations to eat because I wouldn’t have had that option at most other places.  However, it wasn’t a food expense so it shouldn’t count (hey, don’t whine, I make the rules!).

Grand total: $3.98

Despite a total lunch expenditure pushing $200, I’m still in the game.  Well fed under $5.00

Stats:

Day: 2
Day’s cost: $3.98
Day’s change: $1.02
Running total: $8.06
Running change: $1.94
Meal Quantity: 5 out of 5 (1 being nothing, 5 being more than I can eat) (I tossed the Black Olives)
Meal Quality: 5 out of 5 (1 being inedible, 5 being best lunch ever!) (great pizza, definitely recommended)
