I eat as I type…
So yesterday I had finally had enough! I dropped the better part of $12.00 for a sandwich, soda and cookie at a local joint. I couldn’t believe it. Now, it was a pretty good sandwich, but TWELVE BUCKS?!? Come on!!
Then it hit me. I needed to experiment with lunch on $5 with some basic rules (self-imposed of course).
Ground Rules:
1. $5.00 That’s it, not a PENNY more.
2. If I walk into a place, I HAVE TO EAT. So that means if everything on the menu is over $5, I’m getting a cup of water and calling it lunch.
3. Can’t eat at the same place twice
Could I do this for a week? Forever?!? This could be fun…
I was going to start this next week, but seeing as how all I had in cash today was $5, it was going to start now.
First up:

I haven’t eaten at Subway in a long time, but fond memories of the late 80’s when the first Subway opened up downtown where we would eat lunch came rushing back. THEN I could eat on 5 bucks. Could I do it now?
Walking to the door, are HUGE signs advertising the $5 FOOT LONG, but at a 5.1% tax rate, that sweet deal was going to be out of my budget unless I found someone who wanted to go halves with me (but that might be cheating).
I ventured inside and before I even got to the menu, I saw a small flier stating $2.79 sandwich deals! SCORE! Now we’re talking! A closer look showed that this Subway (Ruby Isle – Brookfield, WI) has a daily deal with a $2.79 sandwich. I read the fine print to make sure I didn’t have to do anything illegal or add things to exceed my $5, and ordered up the BMT which was the cheap sandwich of the day. Now, I’ve never had a BMT before, but it was within the budget, so I was game.
Since ‘toasting’ didn’t cost me anything extra I went for it, and had them load up the veggies. Then came the crucial moment. What will I do with all this extra money?!? Quick math says I’ve got just less than 2 bucks left to buy something extra. Cookies, 3/$1, chips $1.09 or soda’s starting at $1.49. I went the safe route and grabbed a bag of chips, knowing that at a bare minimum, THEY would be good and I can have some Milwaukee’s Best (water) back at the office in my trusty Nalgene.

Grand total: $4.08
Rock on! $.92 to spare.
While not quite as satisfying as a plate of Fajitas from Jose’s, it wasn’t too bad and met all goals.
Stats:
Day: 1
Day’s cost: $4.08
Day’s change: $.92
Running total: $4.08
Running change: $.92
Meal Quantity: 4 out of 5 (1 being nothing, 5 being more than I can eat)
Meal Quality: 3 out of 5 (1 being inedible, 5 being best lunch ever!)

Can use the $0.92 later in the week?

Not sure yet. Maybe I splurge one day, or simply revel in the 6th or 7th day being “free”.
